Jim we have never met but I was a friend of Mary's for over 40 years. I also have great memories of her and a priceless era. The late DANNY ROMO who passed away in 2007 was.a great friend of Mary also and ran 🏃‍♂️ The Supremes fan club from 1971-1979 and did a hell of a job operating it. He also was a great singer on the side which hearing you sing reminded me of him. Thank You.

There's a 1975 appearance of Diana Ross on the Johnny Carson Show where she pregnant mentions having gone recently to see The Supremes in concert, she then suddenly takes the microphone while sitting between Johnny and Ed McMahon and begins singing Baby Love sounding as authentic as the original sound from 1964. It's quite impressive and she is very natural and sweet in her performance. However it got me thinking that after 5 years away from The Supremes and adamant about closeting her past for her own singular style and path, why would she go back to a Supremes song and talk do much about them on The Tonight Show? After all she had just made the film Mahogany and was promoting it with a montage clip on the show. Speculating I wondered if she did it spitefully as a challenge to Mary , Cindy and the Payne woman because she didn't like their new energetic medley performance and was trying to remind the audience how she expects songs like Baby Love to be performed? Yet at her own concerts she rushes through Supremes hits like a commercial jingle. Strange but I think it was revealing her insecurities that the Supremes were doing fine without her and with a new style that the audience loved and she felt a tinge of jealousy and wanted to "reown" the song and how it should sound. She is very cunning in her actions that could be perceived as sweet and innocent yet veiled by her narcissism.
